Author Guidelines

The Journal of Comparative and International Higher Education (JCIHE) Editorial Board is pleased to consider manuscripts which deal with the complementary fields of comparative and international higher education. All submissions must address issues, analysis, dissemination of theory or practice relating to higher education. Articles or Essays can focus on comparing different geographical contexts of higher education and/or different fields of internationalization of higher education.

Style and Format

The Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education follows the APA style (7th Edition). USA spelling (e.g., center, color, organize) and punctuation are preferred (single quotations within double if needed). Articles that are in other styles will not be accepted.

Requirements

It is mandatory that the following requirements be addressed. Any manuscript that does not follow these requirements will receive a desk rejection.

  • JCIHE will only review quality manuscripts that meet the Aims and Scope of the journal.
  • Manuscripts that do not adhere to the guidelines will be rejected.

Publication Guidelines

Authors must follow the submission guidelines of the journal:

  1. Submission will not be considered if they have been previously published. Submissions will not be considered if they are currently being considered for publication by another journal.
  2. Submit a submission prepared for masked review. Please see "Ensuring a Masked Review" for assistance.
  3. Submit a submission prepared for “Unmasked Review”, which includes a short paragraph of biography details for all contributors.
  4. You are invited to add your ORCID Number when you submit your manuscript.
  5. All Submission files must be in:
    • Microsoft Word file format
    • Paper size in Portrait Mode
    • Margins at 1 inch on all sides
    • 1.5 spaced lines
    • 0.5 inch indent (automatic) for each paragraph
    • Do not add an extra space between paragraphs.
    • Use Subheadings in the APA 7th edition style.
    • Use these font styles and font sizes: Calibri 12, Arial 12, Lucida Sans Unicode 10, Times New Roman 12, and Georgia 11
  6. Abstract must contain all of the following: (a) be 150 words, (b) context/purpose and Research Questions, (c) Theoretical Construct; (d) Methods, (e) findings/results and (e) conclusion/key message. A 2nd abstract can be submitted in a non-English language.
  7. USA spelling and punctuation are preferred (e.g., center, color, organize). However, upon request, JCIHE will consider other English spellings and punctuation.
  8. Authors are encouraged to contextualize their argument, when possible, by citing existing debates and discussions previously published in JCIHE. Share how results of your manuscript contribute to published articles on related issues. These links build a sense of continuity and foster scholarly dialogue within the journal.
  9. All Manuscripts must be in APA 7th edition for writing style, headings, in-text citations and references. Submissions not in APA 7th edition will be desk rejected.

    DISCLOSURE OF AI USE: CITING AI USE:To maintain academic integrity, you must disclose the use of Generative AI tools using APA 7th edition. If you use AI to start your research or as a tool for brainstorming, you MUST include a use in-text citations and reference. Also include a statement describing the specific AI tool(s) or resources you used and how you used them. This means you must give credit to the AI tool(s) employed. In addition, any use of Generative AI tolls must be disclosed in the submission letter to the editor.

    • APA 7th Edition uses 4 levels of heading:
      • Level 1: Centered, Boldface, Title Case Heading: Level 1 Heading. Text starts new paragraph.
      • Level 2: Flush left, Boldface, Title Case Heading: Level 1 Heading. Text starts a new paragraph
      • Level 3: Flush Left, Boldface Italicized, Title Case Heading: Level 1 Heading. Text starts a new paragraph
      • Level 4: Indented, Boldface Italicized, Title Case Heading Ending With a Period: Level 1 Heading. Paragraph text continues on the same line as the same paragraph.
  10. All sources mentioned in the references must be included in-text

  12. All references for journal articles must include page numbers and DOI.
  13. All references for websites or other types of publications must include URLs.
  14. Endnotes and footnotes are not accepted.
  15. References that are not in the correct APA format may result in a desk rejection.
  16. Place tables/figures in landscape format. All tables/charts should be smaller than 6x9; images with a high resolution e.g., 300 dpi. Each table/figure should appear in one page. All illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  17. As part of our commitment to ensuring an ethical, transparent, and fair peer review process, JCIHE is a supporting member of ORCID, the Open Researcher and Contributor ID. To learn more, ORCID provides a unique and persistent digital identifier that distinguishes researchers from every other researcher, even those who share the same name, and, through integration in key research workflows such as manuscript and grant submission, supports automated linkages between researchers and their professional activities, ensuring that their work is recognized.

Submissions will be returned to authors who do not adhere to these guidelines and who do not submit their manuscript using the JCIHE Submission Template. Only manuscripts of sufficient quality that meet the aims and scope of JCIHE will be reviewed. There are no fees required to submit or publish in JCIHE.
