Examining Race, Racism, and Racialization in the Internationalization of Higher Education from Global Perspectives

Abstract

This introduction frames the special issue, “Examining Race, Racism, and Racialization in the Internationalization of Higher Education from Global Perspectives,” by arguing that race is foundational, rather than peripheral, to the internationalization of higher education. Emerging from an unprecedented response to the call for proposals, and from an editorial decision to expand the project into two special issues in light of the urgency of the topic and the broader geopolitical climate, this introduction is organized around five interconnected themes: (1) positioning race as foundational to internationalization; (2) framing internationalization as a set of power relations; (3) examining the racialized intersectional experiences of international students; (4) foregrounding student activism; and (5) interrogating the politics of knowledge production.

Across conceptual, empirical, methodological, and reflective contributions, the issue brings together scholars, doctoral students, and practitioners representing a range of institutional types and country contexts. Collectively, the articles show that internationalization is shaped by colonial legacies, racial hierarchies, linguistic domination, epistemic inequality, and uneven geopolitical relations, while also highlighting possibilities for resistance, solidarity, and more just forms of global higher education. In doing so, the special issue speaks directly to the aims of the Journal of Comparative and International Higher Education by advancing critical, rigorous, and globally diverse scholarship that engages theory, policy, and practice and moves the field toward more historically grounded and socially just approaches to internationalization.
