Abstract
The purpose of this research is to report on an investigation of cognitive decision-making processes used by effective elementary mathematics teachers working in a variety of cultural, language, and socio-economic settings. It was hypothesized that several processes would be documented across teachers in all schools. It was also hypothesized that processes might differ depending upon the type of school and students involved. My long range interest is in finding out what makes elementary mathematics teachers effective in order to add to the body of knowledge in this field and use the findings of this study in the service of better elementary mathematics teacher preparation, enhancement, and selection.
