Abstract

As an historical study, this paper reports the investigation of the nature of the emerging synaesthetics movement. Appropriate analogies are made to models in the fields of the arts and science. Research in the 50 states in the period 1980-1982 led to the following questions: (1) What are the origins of the synaesthetics movement? (2) What are the objectives of the synaesthetics movement? (3) How has the movement developed over the period 1970-1982? Sub questions: (a) How has synaesthetics been applied in education and education related programs, e.g., school museum programs, nationally? (b) How has the movement developed in the literature? (4) What is the historical significance of the synaesthetics movement in education? These questions were answered through the following procedures: (1) field research in museums in the 50 states, (2) interviews and correspondence with arts educators and scientists, (3) replies to questionnaires sent to arts consultants/directors of the 50 states, (4) research of published and unpublished documents and literature on aspects of synaesthesia. ^
