Abstract

Oxidized poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) or poly( enol- ketone) (PEK), which reacts with metals to form chelates due to the 1,3-diketone system, has been prepared. Energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (EDX), UV spectrometry and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR/ATR) were used for the quantitative study of the metal-polymer complexes on surface. The biodegradability of PEK and PVA has been measured by viscometry. Both PEK and PVA were found biodegradable and indicated the enhancement of polymer degradation on addition of casamino acid.^ The crosslinking reactions of PEK and PVA were studied by using different crosslinking reagents. The highly crosslinked PEK hydrogels were insoluble in water and were compared with poly(HEMA) and copoly (HEA-MA) hydrogels.^ The applications of PEK to controlled-release drug systems, wastewater treatment, polymer-metal catalyst and biomedical applications were discussed. ^
