Abstract
This research involves catalytic applications of Octahedral Molecular Sieve (OMS) materials including OMS-1 and cryptomelane (OMS-2) for the oxidation of cyclohexane in both liquid and gas phases. ^ Oxidative dehydrogenation of cyclohexane has been of interest to scientists in the past few decades, but unfortunately benzene which is carcinogenic is always the dominating product. OMS materials have been found to be unique in the oxidative dehydrogenation of cyclohexane because cyclohexene is the main product and the production of benzene is totally suppressed. OMS-2 is more active than OMS-1, but less selective for the formation of useful products; such as cyclohexene, a -methyl tetrahydrofuran ( a -methyl THF) and pentanal. ^ OMS-1 and OMS-2 were used for the liquid phase oxidation of cyclohexane with tertiary butyl hydrogen peroxide (TBHP) as the oxidant. OMS-1 shows high activities with 13.1% total yields of useful products (cyclohexanol, cyclohexanone, cyclohexyl hydrogen peroxide, and tertiary butyl cyclohexyl perether or TBCP) at 80°C. OMS-2 has higher oxidative ability for this system and 16.5% total yields of useful products have been achieved even at 60°C. ^
