Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the current role of superintendents relative to time management, leadership styles, and selected demographic characteristics in Connecticut school districts. The five variables used in this study were: Time management, leadership styles, years of superintendent experience, size of school district, and per pupil expenditure.^ In order to determine how superintendents manage their time, the Executive Time Management Instrument (ETMI) was developed. The content validity for this instrument was determined to be .90 or greater. The test-retest reliability for the entire instrument resulted in a .97 coefficient. The internal consistency reliability of the test's scale scores ranged between .62 and .81, as well as .92 for the total test score.^ The eight hypotheses under examination were tested using correlation, t-test, and regression analyses. Hypotheses 1 through 4 were tested through use of Pearson Product-Moment correlation procedures. In addition, a t-test was used to examine Hypothesis 1. Multiple regression analyses were employed to address Hypotheses 5 through 8. All hypotheses were examined at the .05 level of significance.^ The findings of this study indicate that: (1) there was a significant relationship between time management and leadership style of superintendents; (2) there was a significant relationship between time management and years of experience of superintendents; and (3) no significant relationship existed between time management and the variables of size of school districts or per pupil expenditure. This study's major contribution to the field of educational administration was the development of a statistically reliable and valid time management instrument. The ETMI measures how well time is managed. Within the context of the instrument are five scales of time management. The instrument ascertains areas of strengths and weaknesses within the affective characteristic of time management. ^
