Abstract
The American Tradition of International Law: Great Expectations 1789-1914 joins the progression of insightful and important scholarship by Professor Mark W. Janis. This elegant book develops themes Professor Janis has introduced elsewhere: the importance of an historical perspective on international law, the connections between religion and international law, the development of international courts and tribunals, the application of international law to individuals, and the question of universalism.' Professor Janis's work shapes how we conceptualize many core aspects of international law.
