Abstract
I have been asked to speak on the question of repatriation. This is hard to do without also speaking about the rights of acquisition. For typically it is only when the clear title to something acquired is in question that repatriation occurs (repatriation being the return of something to its country of origin when "origin" is the determining factor in establishing clear title). Thus I will speak about both acquisition and repatriation. And I will do so from the perspective of the public art museum, the kind of collecting institution with which I am most familiar.
