Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the promotion of international labor standards by the United States before and after the move toward hemispheric economic integration epitomized by the NAFTA, a process that is likely to accelerate as a result of the agreements reached by hemispheric leaders during the December 1994 Summit of the Americas. The paper is divided into three parts. Part I reviews efforts on the part of the United States to promote international labor standards through trade and economic legislation. Part II focuses on the NAALC as an instrument to promote labor standards in North America. Part III examines subregional integration efforts in the Americas and discusses how the promotion of labor standards will be affected by the ongoing process of hemispheric economic integration.
