Abstract
This article considers whether the Mercado Comiin del Sur (MERCOSUR, made up of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay) can join the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). This will be done from a predominately legal focus, and from the perspective of MERCOSUR. Part I contains a description of MERCOSUR, including the current state of progress and evaluation. Part II considers relations between MERCOSUR and ALADI with a view toward insertion into NAFTA and other regional integration plans. Part III draws comparisons between MERCOSUR and NAFTA from both a legal perspective and an economic one. Part IV looks at the possibilities of the expansion of NAFTA and the Free Trade Area of the Americas. Part V concludes that there are no legal impediments to MERCOSUR's accession to the NAFTA. However, there are numerous obstacles to overcome before this can occur.
